With panoramic views over Belfast Lough, Carrickfergus Grammar stands in 60 acres of grounds and is one of the youngest controlled grammar schools in Northern Ireland. Established in 1962 with 60 pupils and four teachers, the school has now expanded to a roll of more than 800 pupils drawn from 25 feeder schools. Buildings were added in 1983 as pupil numbers started to increase. New physical education complex in 1989, comprising gymnasium, changing facilities, tennis courts and playgrounds; extensive playing fields. New information technology suites in 1992; keyboard laboratory in 1998; internet suite extended in 2000. Pupils have distinguished themselves in a range of sports, including rugby, football, hockey, and athletics. Music is a strength, pupils can join traditional orchestras, choirs as well as wind and big bands. Pupils learn interview skills through a local business partnership. There are opportunities to get involved in the local community through charity work and the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme; public-speaking; Scripture Union. Before-school care, from 8.30am; after-school care, until 5pm. Over-subscribed, with 1.3 applications per place. Sportsmark Gold (2000); Investor in People status (1999).
