Background:
Founded in 1895, this is a large grammar school with boarding for girls and boys. The main school is adjacent to Queen's University of Belfast. The premises comprise the original college building (1865), the Chapel of Unity (1965), and Whitla Hall (1935) capable of seating 1,000 people. Other more recent additions include a technology centre, a sports hall, an art department and a music department with rooms for individual practice. There are two gymnasia and an indoor heated swimming pool, as well as 52 acres of playing fields nearby and a new school boat house has been built. The college follows the national curriculum. There are approximately 50 clubs and societies offered. Over-subscribed, with two applications per place. Ethos: 'Founded by the Methodist Church, the school has always been open to members of all religions. Strives for academic excellence; supports the development of the whole individual; encourages tolerance and mutual respect; stimulates personal endeavour and cares pastorally for the individual.' .
